                     INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1.         185 day contract

2.         Salary based on district salary schedule for the position.

3.         10 days sick leave per year of employment.

4.         3 days personal leave.

 

5.         School holidays off work.


        PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:


1.         Earn at least one of the following:  Associates Degree; 60 college hours of credit
            or pass the Para-Professional Praxis Exam

2.         Must pass an Arkansas State Police background check, an FBI background
            check, and a Department of Human Services background check all at your own
            expense. ($49.75)

3.         Must have the ability to work well with students of all ages and grade ranges.

4.         Must have the ability to use a desk top computer.

5.         Must be able to communicate effectively.

6.         Provide direct instruction of students under direct supervision of teacher.

7.         Conduct instructional activities assigned by the teacher; work with individuals,
            students, or small groups for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning
            concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and grade-level
            standards.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES cont.:

1.         Implement, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs
            and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students’
            academic success through a defined course of study.

2.         Assist in classroom management. 

3.         Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the
            classroom.  This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground.

4.         Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials.

5.         Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.

6.         Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

7.         Assist teacher with administrative records and preparation of required reports.

8.         Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples,
            emotional support, and a friendly attitude and general guidance.  Keep the
            teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

9.        Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.

10.       Adhere to the appropriate code of ethics and student confidentiality.

11.       Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

12.       Other duties as assigned by administration.

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS and/or REQUIRMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, an Instructional Assistant may be required to:

1.         Maintain emotional control under stress, as well as stand and circulate for
            extended periods of time.

2.         See for the purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other
            printed matter and observing students.

3.         Hear and understand speech at normal levels.

4.         Communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.

5.         Bend and twist, kneel and stoop, run and crawl.

6.         Reach in all directions.

7.         Lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 20 pounds.

Physical Requirements:  The normal work environment for this position is a school/classroom environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of an Instructional Aide in the Sheridan School District.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to read and follow a variety of instructions.  May be required to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency with computers and programs associated with the position.
